Clinical experience
I have over 20 years of experience working in rehabilitative exercise and physiotherapy, including a decade specialising in the care of people with neuromuscular disorders (NMDs). As a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) in Queen Square, I provide a dedicated, highly specialised physiotherapy service for people with muscle disorders and serve as the Principal Physiotherapist for the National Kennedy’s Disease Clinic.
My clinical approach includes the development of targeted strength training programmes, functional movement retraining, and tailored exercise prescription to support mobility, reduce compensatory movement patterns, and improve overall physical resilience. I also have specialist expertise in multisensory balance rehabilitation, using integrated sensory and proprioceptive strategies to address postural instability and reduce fall risk in people with NMDs.
This clinical practice is closely integrated with my ongoing research and consultancy work, ensuring that the rehabilitation strategies I deliver are informed by the latest evidence and best practice.
Research experience
I hold a PhD in neuromuscular disorders and currently work as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. My research focuses on self-management strategies, rehabilitation approaches, and balance interventions for people living with neuromuscular conditions. I am a senior member of the Neuromuscular Rehabilitation Research Group at UCLH, regularly presenting my work at international conferences and contributing to peer-reviewed publications advancing neuromuscular care.
In addition to my research activities, I supervise MSc projects and provide external consultancy to academic, clinical, and third-sector organisations. My expertise lies in the critical appraisal and application of evidence to real-world rehabilitation challenges, supporting the development and evaluation of high-quality services for people with neuromuscular conditions.
Public engagement
I am committed to meaningful public engagement and the co-production of healthcare solutions. I have led and contributed to several projects funded through UCL’s Engagement Programme, working directly with people living with neuromuscular conditions to develop innovative rehabilitation initiatives and self-management approaches.
One recent project, How to Swim on Land, explores the experience of swimming and its therapeutic potential for people with NMDs. Developed in collaboration with people with lived experience, this project reimagines water-based movement for those who may not have access to traditional aquatic therapy. Other initiatives include the development of multisensory balance programmes and peer-support models designed in collaboration with service users.
