Dr Louie Lee — Clinical Specialist in Neuromuscular Physiotherapy

I’m Dr. Louie Lee, a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist with over a decade of experience working with people living with neuromuscular disorders (NMDs). I hold a PhD in this field and combine my clinical practice with ongoing research at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. My work has been presented internationally, and I regularly contribute to research and discussions shaping the future of neuromuscular care.

Due to their rarity, NMDs are often poorly understood, and misconceptions—particularly around exercise—can limit the support people receive. There remains a belief that activity is harmful, when in fact, the latest evidence shows that carefully structured rehabilitation can play a vital role in maintaining strength, mobility, and wellbeing. I also challenge the idea that living with an NMD inevitably means decline. While these conditions are often progressive, there are positive, practical actions people can take to improve their quality of life, remain active, and continue doing what matters to them.

If you would like to discuss how I can support you, please get in touch.

Living well with a neuromuscular disorder (NMD) is possible with the right support, guidance, and therapeutic approach. As a clinical specialist physiotherapist, I understand that managing the challenges of NMD goes beyond addressing physical symptoms; it’s about empowering individuals to maintain independence, participate in meaningful activities, and enhance their overall quality of life.

My approach focuses on setting meaningful goals and building confidence in self-management. Whether it’s improving balance, managing fatigue, or living with pain, I am committed to helping people with NMD stay active and live fulfilling lives.

Specialisms

Balance and gait rehabilitation

Comprehensive assessment and targeted rehabilitation to address balance impairments and gait disturbances associated with neuromuscular disorders. Interventions are informed by current evidence on sensorimotor control, proximal stability, and compensatory movement strategies to optimise functional mobility and reduce fall risk

Optimised strength training for NMDs

Individualised strength training programmes tailored to the unique needs of people with neuromuscular disorders. Based on the latest evidence, interventions focus on safe, progressive loading to enhance functional capacity, preserve muscle strength, and support long-term physical resilience.

Pain and fatigue management

Evidence-informed strategies to address chronic pain and fatigue in neuromuscular disorders. Interventions integrate activity pacing, movement-based approaches, and self-management support to improve functional tolerance, reduce symptom burden, and enhance participation in daily activities
